“Kenny (Omega) and Aubrey (Edwards) have a lot to do with the direction of the game. They are spending a lot of time on its development, putting in a lot of time. We want to ensure that the video game is done right, and it is not a half-assed effort,” Jericho said.
The 49-year-old wrestler, who last appeared in WWE 2K19, compared AEW’s video game to its toy line, saying fans have appreciated the quality of the action figures and the promotion hopes to produce similarly high-quality games.
In August, Omega said that an AEW video game being was developed, although he didn’t share any specific details, such as which studio the company was working with. He did say that he hoped the game would be a new take on classic wrestling games likes WrestleMania 2000 and WWF No Mercy, which launched in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
On January 8, 2019, Jericho made a surprise appearance at an AEW media event, which fueled speculation that he would join the promotion. Soon after, the former nine-time WWE Intercontinental Champion signed a full-time performer’s three-year contract with AEW. He made his debut at the promotion’s inaugural event Double or Nothing on May 25, defeating Omega. He then went on to defeat Adam Page at All Out to become the inaugural AEW World Champion.
Last year, WWE released WWE 2K20, which received negative reviews for its bugs at launch and technical issues. This year, the promotion went in a different direction and released WWE 2K Battlegrounds, which has received mixed reviews. Some praised the game mixed for its art style and co-operative gameplay modes but others criticized the use of microtransactions and lack of gameplay features.
AEW is no doubt taking notes and hopefully learning what to avoid in their game. Although no dates have been announced, a late 2021 or early 2022 release seems likely.
