John Cena has had one of the greatest wrestling careers in history and is someone that many people now consider to be a Mount Rushmore contender. A big reason for his success is the fact he has made slight tweaks and changes to his character over time, with many different versions of Cena taking place over the years.

10Embrace The Hate

This particular storyline is not only the worst of John Cena’s career, but it is one of the worst in modern wrestling. Kane’s attempt to get Cena to turn heel and embrace the dark side fell very flat and not only did it hurt him, but it also squashed Zack Ryder’s momentum as well.

It was a version of Cena fans didn’t like at all. Seeing him tease the possibility of embracing the hate, despite the fact everyone knew that the heel turn was absolutely never going to happen.

9Ruthless Aggression

Fans often like to talk about John Cena’s early run in wrestling with his iconic debut against Kurt Angle being one of the best ever. He made an instant impact with his ruthless aggression, but this period of his career wasn’t as strong as people remember.

This period of time for him was one where he really struggled to connect with audiences and sort of went on from one random storyline to another without really making much impact.

8Returning Legend

Right now whenever John Cena returns, fans are given the returning legend version of him, which is something totally new. This side of his persona started when Cena began to take his Hollywood career more seriously and he drifted away from wrestling.

He now makes sporadic appearances where he’s faced the likes of Andrade and feuded with Bray Wyatt. He commands a lot of respect which brings a lot of great work out of him and it is a version that should only get better with time.

7Free Agent

This version of John Cena was basically his last real run where WWE was his primary goal. He could work on both Raw and SmackDown and WWE fit him in where needed, which allowed him to be unpredictable and it involved him in some great storylines.

He got to work with Baron Corbin, The Undertaker, and team up with Nikki Bella at WrestleMania. It felt like Cena just enjoying himself, knowing it was his last major run and audiences felt that energy and relished in the moment with him.

6Facing AJ Styles

John Cena feuding with AJ Styles is something fans never thought they would see happen. It was the prime definition of a dream feud and it brought out a totally new side of John Cena where he took shots at independent wrestling and where AJ had come from.

It was also a really popular version of John Cena and one which audiences loved to see. He took things really seriously and his promos were brilliant, with his in-ring work during this period being even better.

5First WWE Title Run

While his Dr. Thuganomics days were slipping away, John Cena hadn’t reached the peak of his PG Era gimmick yet in 2005. This brought together one of the best runs of his career where Cena was legitimately beloved by the entire WWE Universe.

There was no 50/50 audiences for Cena at this point, he was just incredibly popular with the fans. It led to some fantastic moments from feuding with JBL to being the number one Raw draft pick as WWE started to groom him as the top star in WWE.

4Complete Dominance (2006-2007)

Between the years 2006 and 2007, John Cena really began to dominate the main event scene. He was an established name by this point and he was on a real roll, having great feuds with the likes of Edge and Shawn Michaels.

Cena was the face of the company and had really earned his spot during this time, simply down to how consistent his performances were both in the ring and on the microphone. Cena’s third reign with the WWE Championship lasted 380 days, beginning at Unforgiven 2006 and ending in October 2007, following an injury.

3United States Open Challenge

When John Cena defeated Rusev to walkaway with the United States Championship, a lot of fans complained about the idea. People felt Cena was squashing young talent but in the end, this run with the US Title was one of the best of Cena’s career.

His weekly open challenge brought out the best in countless young talents from Stardust and Neville to Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. He made everyone look great and he really earned the respect of the fans.

2Dr. Thuganomics

This might be one of the oldest versions of John Cena, but the Dr. Thuganomics gimmick is an incredibly popular one that has always been a hit. Without this gimmick there likely wouldn’t be a John Cena, which is why it is such a great version of him.

He brought his love of rapping and ability to spit rhymes into the wrestling world and it really was incredible. He might have only been a young talent, but he quickly became the most popular name in wrestling with his amazing promos, which took him right to the top of the WWE ladder.

1Cena At His Peak

John Cena from 2011-2013 was the peak of his wrestling career. He brought out some mega feuds during this time against the likes of CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, and of course, The Rock.

While facing The People’s Champion a second time wasn’t ideal, the build to their first WrestleMania match was Cena at his best. He blurred the lines between story and reality and felt like a more mature version of the character, which audiences really appreciated.
